Officer Noah Dueker with the Chandler Police Department said a key strategy to combating porch piracy is building connections with neighbors.
CHANDLER, Ariz. — The online holiday shopping season has begun so the Chandler Police Department (CPD) is warning residents about the rising risk of package theft.
Officer Noah Dueker with CPD, said the increase in online shopping has created more opportunities for criminals to steal deliveries from residential porches.
“It’s a symptom of our modern condition,” Duker said. “Everybody’s ordering their things online, and you’ve got this plethora of opportunity out there for criminals.”
Duker noted that package thefts increase during the holidays due to higher shopping volumes, with thieves targeting everything from dog treats to high-end electronics.
To prevent becoming a victim, Dueker recommends several strategies:
- Be home to receive packages during estimated delivery windows
- Use secure delivery options like Amazon lockers or store pickup
- Build relationships with neighbors who can help retrieve packages
“Building that sense of community with your neighbors is probably one of the best things that you can do,” Dueker said.
