In honour of the Air Jordan 1’s 40th anniversary, Jordan Brand is taking bold steps with its “Banned” campaign, obscuring select AJ1s with black overlays to mimic a digital ban—setting the stage for the highly anticipated return of the Air Jordan 1 High ’85 Bred.

In addition, Jordan Brand took things further by temporarily deactivating its official social media accounts, creating the illusion that, much like the Air Jordan 1 “Bred,” they too had been virtually banned.

Nike’s marketing genius dates back to 1984 when Michael Jordan defied the NBA’s strict sneaker rules by wearing the red-and-black Air Jordan 1, resulting in $5,000 fines per game—penalties Nike gladly paid, turning the ban into a legendary campaign.
