Beaumont Police explain new reporting for non-emergency calls [Video]

Police, on Wednesday, are reminding the public that this strategy does not mean residents are left unsupported.

BEAUMONT, Texas — Facing public questions, Beaumont Police are further explaining a new strategy to prioritize emergency response by reducing officers’ time spent on non-emergency calls.

The plan, which goes into effect on Feb 17, 2025, was announced at Tuesday’s Beaumont City Council meeting by Beaumont Police Chief Tim Ocnacheck.

The department is now actively encouraging citizens to report non-emergency incidents by phone or online, allowing officers to remain available for urgent, in-progress situations, according to a news release from the department Wednesday morning.

12News first posted an article on the changes to Facebook on Tuesday evening and by mid-morning Wednesday there were more than 1,100 comments on the post. Many commenters appeared to be under the impression that the police would now be leaving them on their own.
