BBB: Why you should be wary of free packages [Video]

MONROE, La. (KNOE) – Have you ever received a package you don’t remember ordering? According to the Federal Trade Commission, this is a scam.

Scammers have been sending people fake “luxury” items and using their personal information to write positive reviews.

Getting a free item in the mail may not sound the alarm in your mind, but it should.

If an unexpected package shows up on your doorstep, FTC officials say your personal information may have fallen into the wrong hands.

If this happens to you, here’s how to protect yourself from possible identity theft:

  • Change the passwords on all your online shopping accounts in case they were compromised
  • Check your credit weekly for free at AnnualCreditReport.com for accounts you did not open
  • Do not contact the sender
