Woolworths' top boss has promised no jobs will be lost despite its warehouses switching to using high-tech robots to help do customers' online shopping.

The supermarket giant will soon unveil the first of its automated 'micro-fulfilment' centres in Carrum Downs in Melbourne, in a bid to keep up with growing online demand amid the COVID-19 pandemic. 

The new site is smaller than standard distribution centres and are either held alongside or in the back docks of existing Woolworths stores.

Robots will be used to select items off shelves and take them to workers who will sort the products into customers' orders for online delivery.

Despite the technology upgrade, Woolworths Chief Executive Brad Banducci said ten times more people will be employed in a decade at Woolworths stores than they are now.
