(NBC) When the pandemic hit, online shopping in the U.S. increased just as manufacturing overseas slowed down. Those goods are arriving at the nation’s ports where workers are struggling to get them unloaded and sent across the country. Now, the White House is taking steps to ease the log jam.

Some of the nation’s biggest retailers and shippers are promising to move more goods overnight and on weekends to help fill store shelves in time for the holidays.

Shoppers frustrated by empty store shelves and rising prices might soon see some relief as the nation’s biggest ports and retailers kick into high gear.

President Joe Biden said, “Today’s announcement has the potential to be a game changer. I say potential, because all of these goods won’t move by themselves.”
